Can St Kilda win their first Grand Final since 1966? Can Geelong win their second Grand Final in 3 years? These questions will be answered in the 2009 AFL Grand Final.
The 2009 AFL Grand Final will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Saturday September 26 between the Geelong Cats and the St Kilda Saints. This will be the first time that these two teams have met in a Grand Final.
It has been a 43-year wait since St Kilda captured its sole flag, though it heads for the final stage with the knowledge of a win over Geelong in round 14 – the only time the sides met in the 2009 home-and-away rounds.
The Saints led by as much as 23 points in that game, but survived a late surge from the Cats to win by just six.
Until that point, both sides were undefeated. St Kilda claimed the minor premiership with 20 wins for the season while the Cats finished in second spot with 18.
